What you get
ChatGPT calls your AppControler workspace through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and answers with live data instead of guesses:
- “List every AI app connected to our workspace, highest risk first.”
- “Who authorized Notion AI with company sign-in?”
- “What is our approve / review / block policy summary?”
- “Which contract act-by windows land in the next 30 days?”
Before you start
- An AppControler account with a connected Google Workspace.
- A ChatGPT plan that includes custom connectors (check Settings → Apps & Connectors for a “Create” option — availability depends on plan and rollout).
- The MCP server URL:
https://appcontroler.com/api/mcp
Connect ChatGPT (step by step)
Create a custom connector
Open Settings → Apps & Connectors in ChatGPT and choose Create (or Add custom connector).
Paste the AppControler MCP URL
Enter the server URL and save:
https://appcontroler.com/api/mcpSign in through the OAuth window
ChatGPT opens the AppControler sign-in / consent screen in a browser window. Sign in to your workspace if prompted and click Approve. No API key is needed — this is the same OAuth path Claude uses.
If the browser window shows the AppControler consent screen but you are not signed in, sign in first, then approve. The connector activates as soon as the redirect completes.Enable the connector in chat
In a new conversation, open the tools / apps menu and enable the AppControler connector (on plans with developer mode, enable it there).
Ask your first question
Try “List the AI apps connected to our workspace and flag the highest-risk ones.”
Troubleshooting
- No “Create” option in settings — your plan or workspace hasn't received the apps beta yet. Automate with the REST API instead (see the n8n guide) or use Cursor.
- Authentication fails — make sure pop-ups are allowed for chatgpt.com, then re-run the connector auth from settings.
- Connector connects but answers without data — confirm the connector is enabled in the current conversation's tools menu, not just added in settings.
FAQ
Do I need an AppControler API key for ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT custom connectors authenticate with OAuth, so you approve access with your AppControler account instead of pasting a key. If your ChatGPT plan does not include custom connectors yet, use the API key path with Cursor or n8n instead.
Which ChatGPT plans support custom MCP connectors?
Custom connectors roll out with ChatGPT’s apps / developer-mode features and are gated by plan and rollout. Check Settings → Apps & Connectors; if “Create” is available, you can add AppControler. Otherwise ask your workspace owner to enable it or automate via the REST API.
Which workspace does ChatGPT see?
The organization tied to the AppControler account you approve with on the consent screen. Team members who connect see the same workspace they belong to in AppControler.
Can ChatGPT block or approve apps?
If you approve both read and write scopes on the consent screen, the policy tools are available. Ask ChatGPT explicitly, e.g. “Set the app Perplexity to Blocked,” and it will call the set_app_policy tool.
How do I revoke ChatGPT’s access?
Remove the AppControler connector in ChatGPT settings. ChatGPT loses its tokens immediately and AppControler stops accepting them on the next call.
